Saving Money, Not Skipping Plans
Determined to have an eventful summer, but you’re operating on a college-student’s budget? Been there. Still there, actually.
Here at The Edge, we understand the struggle of having champagne taste on a cheaper-than-beer budget. Being young brings excitement for new experiences, an urge to try new things, and a constant whirlwind of plans with friends. But that youth often comes with some stretching of funds – especially in the summertime, when we can’t be operating on meal plans and free frat parties.
But a low-spend summer doesn’t mean a boring one. This time between semesters is what you make of it, so let’s make it fun! Here are some activities to fill your time without draining your bank account.
No-Cost Activities
Host a Backyard Potluck: Invite friends or family over, no occasion necessary. Everyone brings a dish, and suddenly you’re surrounded by good food and better company.
Take a Hike: There’s truly nothing like a nice long walk – it’s free exercise and a mental refresh. Some of the best debriefs happen on those afternoon walks through the neighborhood. Catch up with an old highschool friend, or listen to some podcasts for a bit of solitude.
Game Night: Use what you already have like playing cards and board games. To make things a little more exciting, bring out a folding table and red solo cups when the sun goes down. Make the night loud and lively, or keep it casual with a few friends on lawn chairs and some nostalgic music. Bonus points if you send out a cute evite to build some anticipation. Commit to the bit!
Tanning Date: Invite the girls over for a relaxing afternoon in the backyard. All you need is a bikini, a speaker, and maybe some fresh fruit. Nothing fancy, just enjoying the high UV. Just be careful out there in the sun. Sunscreen, baseball caps and water breaks are highly encouraged.
Watch Parties: Find a TV show that you and your friends love, and have a watch party each week. Rotate who hosts, bring snacks, and make it a little tradition. Whether you're rewatching an old favorite or diving into something new, it's a fun way to stay connected without spending.
Low-Cost Activities
Baseball Games: The summer season just began, so there’s still plenty of time to plan ahead. Get your tickets early enough, and you should be able to snag a cheap deal. Baseball games are a fun summer classic – even from the nosebleeds. Just try to eat beforehand so you don’t fall victim to stadium snack prices.
Group Classes: Group classes are a great way to meet new people and stay active, creative, and busy this summer. Check out local gyms, studios or YouTube options. From fitness to art to cooking, group classes are a productive and social way to fill your weekends.
Scrapbook: This next line may be hard to read, but here goes. We’re not going to be in our 20’s forever. I know, I can’t wrap my head around it either. But documenting the moment while we’re still in it is a great way to capture that college feeling in real-time. Buy a cheap scrapbook, doodle in it, write down inside jokes, collect mementos, and print photos out at CVS for cheap. You’ll be glad to have these memories to look back on one day when you’re cleaning out your room post-grad. Thank me later.
Farmers’ Markets: Visiting the farmers’ market can be a great way to connect with your hometown, support local vendors, and enjoy the fresh air. Grab some fruit or flowers without spending a fortune.
Ice Cream Runs: Basic, we know. But it’s tried and true. Ice cream runs are the ultimate token of a summer well-spent. Who doesn’t want to catch up with friends over a sweet treat? Mix it up by trying new places in neighboring towns instead of your usual spot.
Museums: Many galleries have low admission fees or discount days. It’s a great way to slow down, learn something new and escape the heat.
Ok, Fine. One Swipe Won’t Hurt.
Our last tip is a little less practical in terms of saving money. That said, we believe in treating ourselves within reason. You don’t have to sit out on every activity just to save a buck. Work hard, play hard – but be smart about it.
Allow yourself one splurge this summer. We’re not talking clothes, shoes or the latest drop from Rare Beauty, (as bad as we may want it.) We all know the best things in life aren't things at all. Instead, splurge on an activity that’ll fulfill you for more than just a moment. Choose something that’s a “fun-fact activity.” Something you can tell a story about in those classroom icebreakers next fall. Think concerts, festivals, weekend trips, visiting your roommate’s hometown, or having a beach day. Round up your friends and divide the costs – split meals, share rides, make it work where you can. Memories are priceless, so we believe it’s okay to invest in a good story now and then.
What are you up to this summer?
