Spring Style Detox Guide

Spring Cleaning: a necessary but dreaded to-do. It’s kind of like working out - seemingly impossible to accomplish beforehand, terrible in the moment, yet exhilarating and relieving after its done. There’s a reason they always say the best rewards come from life’s hardest challenges. Usually, spring cleaning day always lands on the day we want to do it least - the weather is sunny and breezy, birds are chirping, and cleaning out the closet is at the  top of our to-do list. Ugh. This to-do has always been something that takes up the entirety of the day, but don’t worry, at The Edge, we have the tools to get this done efficiently. Usually we are  left staring at one top, contemplating whether or not to keep it even though we haven’t touched it in over a year. But hey, maybe it will come back in style? Or maybe you will need it for an upcoming event? The answer to those questions? Probably no, and it is officially time we take control over our wardrobes this spring.

Step One: Take a deep breath in. Thanks to this guide, spring cleaning will be a breeze for you.

Step Two: Begin by focusing on one section of your closet. Go through each item and try it on. Once on, ask yourself these questions: “Does it fit?”, “Is it comfortable?”, “Do I feel confident in it?” “Have I worn it within the last 1.5 years?” If the answer is yes to all, it’s a definite yes to keeping. Some items in your closet may actually not need all of these steps. But, for those hidden gems that were forgotten about, these are necessary questions to ask yourself, and may even make you feel as though you just bought a new piece of clothing!

In a fantasy world, these questions come with an instinctual yes or no. But in real life, many of us have attachment issues to our wardrobes or are as indecisive as ever (or both of those, a catastrophic, yet fixable combination). If you find yourself contemplating any of those questions, ask yourself this: “Would I buy this if I saw it today in the store?” If your answer is a confident yes, keep it! If not, we’re afraid you already know the answer.

Step Three: Creating Piles. If this closet detox is one thing, it’s an organized mess. As we find ourselves in the midst of trying on and throwing to the side, we need some sort of system in place to organize our clothes (and thoughts). To do this, form three piles. The first pile is your pile for clothes that are a definite keep, no questions asked. The second pile is for clothes that we aren’t keeping either because they are not fitting right or don’t align with our style anymore, however, they are in good enough condition to donate or sell. The third pile consists of the clothes that are absolute no’s: clothing items we don’t like anymore and that aren’t in the condition to donate or sell.

If you’ve completed these steps, congratulations! You’ve overcome the hardest steps of this process. For this last step, re-organize your freshly decluttered closet however you’d like. This is the part where you can get creative. Whether it be sorting by color, clothing item, or style, put your clothes back whichever way suits you best.
