When it comes to all things skincare, Korean Beauty leads the narrative in what should and shouldn't be essential in your skincare routine. All the latest skincare trends, from skincare infused makeup to patting products in rather than rubbing, can be accredited to Korean Beauty. K beauty has yet to steer us wrong, which makes jumping on the latest skincare bandwagon all the more exciting. Slugging, the newest K beauty skincare hack, involves using a product that most of us already have in our bathroom cabinets. Slugging is the act of taking a Petroleum-based product and putting a thin layer all over your face as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine— many have been using Vaseline as their product of choice. We know that this trend might not seem the most appealing— and let’s be honest, “slugging” is not the most attractive name. However, adding this simple step might just be the key to healing and hydrating your skin.

The Benefits of Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum acts as a barrier and protects the skin from water loss. Therefore, adding a Petroleum-based product as the last step of your skin routine helps previously applied products absorb into the skin. A common misconception is that Petroleum, or vaseline, clogs pores— this is not true. The molecules of Vaseline and other Petroleum-based products are so large that the product sits atop of skin rather than penetrating the pores, creating a barrier that helps other products absorb into and hydrate the skin.

A Dermatologists Opinion

Dermatologist Stacy Chimento said in an interview with New Beauty that slugging is not for every skin type. Chimento advises that petroleum should not be used as a form of moisturizer but rather as a product to lock in moisture. Dr. Hausauer, another licensed dermatologist, says that slugging works best for dry, sensitive skin, or skin that has a damaged barrier. Hausauer adds that slugging does not have to be a daily step and can be utilized just a few times a week, just like a face mask.

It’s cold outside. Our skin is dry and flaky, and we are desperate for a solution here at The Edge. Slugging could be the simple key in your journey to healthy skin. Happy slugging!
