Victorian Fashion: Your Guide to Looking Timeless This Fall

If you read the title and immediately thought of corsets or high necklines, breathe. Authentic Victorian pieces are classic, but a modern spin can give them new meaning. Zendaya, Dakota Johnson and Rooney Mara are just a few of the many stars who’ve experimented with (and nailed) the trend. So read on to hear about how this look can go from castles to carpets and soon your closet!

The Fitted Blouse

The rouleau (or thread), button loops and ruffled bodice are Victorian staples but the low V-cut brings this piece into the 21st century. The color shown is off-white, but any color will achieve the same look!

A tight-fitting bodice looks great with high-waisted pants. For this look, we chose black denim, but pencil trousers can turn this into a work-appropriate option. Dark wash jeans are the perfect way to take a lighter blouse from a summer to a fall look. Shop the look here.

Ruffles on Ruffles

Ruffles can go from stylish to silly in a matter of seconds, but the key is to wear them strategically. The Victorian era used this trend to add to the blouse without drawing too much attention, and today, the timeless detail has resurfaced.

This piece was paired with a ruffle hem dress and the all-black look makes this much sleeker while keeping the Victorian aesthetic in-tact. Shop the look here.

Sculpted Shoulders

One of the major trends from the Victorian era was the sculpted shoulder. This look came around again in the 90s and, as a result, tons of vintage thrift stores have blouses or jackets with the shoulder pads still in-tact.

This style can easily become too avant-garde for an everyday OOTD, but denim bottoms or a plain skirt can bring it down to earth while creating the perfect mix of classic and modern fashion. Shop the look here.

As we transition into cooler weather, this trend works as the perfect fall aesthetic. So show your take on the Victorian aesthetic and tag us @theedgemag!
