Amal Alamuddin is a name that few, if any, would recognize outside of the legal and humanitarian world. She existed as only a name, allowing her strides and accomplishments to serve the people, not garner fame and attention for herself. She attended St. Hugh’s College at Oxford University in England and New York University School of Law, yet only when she married famed actor, George Clooney, in 2014 did she become a beloved public figure. Amal Clooney, as she is now known, has become a fashion icon since her admittance into the red carpet lifestyle. She reinvigorates our love for the classics yet reminds us of what a bold styling piece can do for an otherwise uninspiring outfit. Her personal style began to cultivate long before her marriage to Clooney as she maintained a sense of ease and timelessness as she marched into courtrooms and passionately fought for human rights. Her ability to make business professional look chic is a skill that I know we all strive for. Despite her grace and effortlessness, we must not get lost in her dream of a closet.

The media often sees a woman, and despite her accomplishments and professional stature, demean her into nothing more than a paper doll to critique and commend. For instance, whilst giving an impassioned speech at the United Nations, some media outlets chose to focus solely on how Amal’s dress looked with the presence of a baby bump. We need girls, and women, who can do both. Owning your personal style and taking pride in what you wear is what we at The Edge celebrate, but we must also praise women who bring change to society. Being able to affect the world for good and look good doing it is what makes women so powerful. Look out for the next article featuring a girl who can do both!
