The West Coast is Calling… Will You Answer?

Here at The Edge we understand the crucial importance of a vacation getaway. A change of scenery alters your perspective and understanding of life; it gives you a breath of fresh air and truly, there is no fresher air than the West Coast.

If you have ever found yourself California Dreamin’, here are some unforgettable views and destination you'll want to visit on your hypothetical Californication (and maybe some songs to listen to while you're there):

If you’re going to San Francisco…

There is truly something special about the first step you take out of the San Francisco International Airport. A gust of wind so fresh you suddenly find yourself wanting to listen to Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac.

Of utmost importance, you have to visit the Golden Gate Bridge. Given the time, keep an eye out for a small opening on your right hand side after the toll right before hopping onto the bridge. You'll find yourself driving through a tunnel then suddenly on the side of a cliff (hey, don't look down!). Ride the road all the way up and you'll find yourself at one of the best views of the Golden Gate. While you're up there, don't forget to take pictures like the cover of the song Sister Golden Hair. By the slightest chance you have a padlock in your pocket, write something special and lock it onto the gate, marking your memories' presence forever.

If you're interested in cultural immersion, there are countless opportunities to explore while in one of the more gorgeous cities. If you get the chance, visit Japan Town Mall as there is a variety of food to try (from ramen to baked goods) and trinkets to buy (blindboxes and souvenirs). There is so much beauty in getting to experience various cultures within a single city, and in San Francisco there is so much discovery to be done!

Oh and don't forget, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair (San Francisco by by Scott McKenzie)

It Never Rains in Southern California

The rumors are true: it never rains in Southern California (well, certainly not figuratively). Maybe rather than a big city, you’re interested in heading down south for a Good Vibrations kind of summer. Well lucky for you, Santa Cruz is on the queue.

There is something special about the way the palm trees sway in Santa Cruz that make you wonder if you’re in a 2016 music video. While there, you must walk right down the line of the Beach Boardwalk. There are rides to be ridden, games to be played, and souvenirs to be bought. Maybe even go for a swim like a seabird, but be warned: the Pacific ocean will make those used to Atlantic temperatures freeze!

So maybe you’re not into the hustle and bustle of San Francisco, and maybe you're just not a very Beach Boys kind of vacationer; no problem! The beauty of California is its diverse geography as there is something for everyone. Whether your best friend is the ocean or forest (or heck maybe both!), we have the place for you: Fort Bragg, California.

For Emma

For our next destination, let's switch up the vibe for our moody travelers that are into northern views and geography. The coastal city of Fort Bragg is the place you want to be. It's where the ocean and forest meet. If you didn't know any better you would think you were in Forks, Washington by way you're surrounded by incredibly tall pine trees. The neighboring towns of the city might seem small but they are mighty. With their Victorian architecture and haunting vibe, it's the place you listen to songs like For Emma by Bon Iver and the rest of the Twilight soundtrack.

While in Fort Bragg, you can't miss the chance to visit Glass Beach. Today, finding actual sea glass is far and few between, but if you have never seen the desert and ocean in the same place, it is a sight you must see. When there, you feel as if you're in the middle of the great canyon like A Horse with No Name. But again, be warned by the water; it's not the place you swim and wear a bathing suit in, a puffer coat is the more suitable attire.

California, above arguably all else, is known for their grape production and wineries. This is a fun experience, even for those not of age. In northern Mendocino county, approximately 2 and a half hours from San Francisco, there is a popular winery by the name Navarro (named after the unincorporated community). Navarro is one of the only wineries in the area to produce grape juice. Even if you're just passing by, it's an experience in itself to simply sit outside by the grapevines, enjoy the view and sip rich grape juice.

Speaking of these regions and famous wineries, it's just as important to mention local communities like the native Pomo people that have historically lived along the Navarro River. Additionally, the hands that make the bulk of grape juice and wine possible: migrant farmworkers. Traveling to new areas also means being conscious of local communities and people. There is a beauty in getting to experience such lovely places, but to also be conscious of the communities and people making it possible. To be a good tourist, you have to be respectfully curious and culturally conscious of your surroundings.

If you take only one recommendation from this article, let it be this: try In-N-Out. No, it isn’t Bojangles and yes, the sweet tea is terrible but it would be unfortunate to travel west and not experience the delicacy of an In-N-Out burger; you simply have to.

There is so much to explore in California, from the forests to ocean front views, there's a little piece of a sweet life for everyone.
