September Scaries: Your Guide to Lock in this Semester

It has officially begun: the start of a new semester, with the highs of syllabus week unfortunately behind us. We at The Edge know this feeling all too well; your new schedule may feel overwhelming, or the balance between work and play feels impossible. Don’t worry, we’ve got you with our tips and tricks to achieve a positive and productive fall semester!

  1. Purchase a planner or calendar

It doesn’t have to be anything special (or maybe it does, if aesthetics motivate you to stay organized)! Planners and calendars are vital in succeeding time management during a jam-packed week of classes, campus events, work, or whatever extracurriculars you may have lined up. Everybody is different; some people prefer using the calendar in their phone or laptop with the automatic alert systems. Others prefer physically writing down their tasks or obligations, as writing has been proven to jog our memory. Either way, finding what works for you to stay organized is the first order of business for a semester of success.

2. Movement each day for one hour

You don’t need to be training for a marathon or starting 75 hard. All you need is to commit to some form of exercise everyday, for at least one hour. This could be a culmination of your time spent walking to and from class, a walk in the nearby neighborhood, or workout classes at local studios. Moving your body not only increases endorphins improving our mood, but it can assist in the creation of a consistent routine. Here are some local workout studios if you’re interested in incorporating any classes into your routine:

  1. Feel Better Yoga Studio

  2. Burn Bootcamp

  3. ISI Elite Training

  4. Club Pilates

  5. O2 Fitness

3. Discover a new show to watch

Sitting down to watch the newest episode of your favorite show is a way to incorporate relaxation into your weekly routine that never fails us. Whether this be the newest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty, or a new thriller Netflix series, TV shows are a perfect form of entertainment during downtime. Here are some that we at The Edge have been enjoying:

  1. Dancing with the Stars (live every Tuesday night on Disney+!)

  2. The Girlfriend

  3. Sirens

  4. Hunting Wives

  5. Wednesday

4. Get to know yourself as a college student

If you’re entering your senior year, it’s likely that you’re well aware of the study habits, workouts, and routines that work best for you. However, there is always room to enhance the habits you possess now. Freshmen and sophomores: acquiring the time management and study skills necessary to thrive as a college student is one of the best ways to invest in yourself. Perhaps, you prefer to study in large groups with friends. Or maybe, you need to remove yourself from distractions and take a solo trip to the library. Whatever the case may be, this form of self reflection will help you succeed in the years to come in college, as well as in your post-graduate endeavors.
