Let’s Talk J-Term Trips

Now that everyone has come back from their various travel adventures and those of us who stayed at Elon for J-term have uttered their final “how was your trip” questions, it's time to get down to the nitty gritty. It seems as though the entire junior and senior classes have collectively decided to flee Burlington and travel the world. So…we want to talk about the hottest spots that were hit this winter and some recommendations of what to do there.

Hot Spot #1 - Florence, Italy

First of all, a true fan favorite destination is Florence. A substantial number of people decided to visit this enchanting city during J- term and boy do we have all the recommendations for you! A must hit spot for the BEST pasta is Trattoria Zaza. We have heard amazing reviews from people who visited, especially regarding their separate menu just for truffle dishes (drooling!). Additionally, their Rigatoni Sorrento style is a must have and you just have to get the gelato for dessert!

While visiting Florence, you should absolutely hit the leather market (but be sure to negotiate your prices). They have endless amounts of leather ranging from purses to belts, to key chains. This is the perfect place to get someone a souvenir and brag about being abroad. You also must climb the Duomo, yes the 463 steps may seem daunting but the view makes everything worth it. Grab a bottle of wine and dine at the top; not only does this make for the perfect evening but amazing pictures!

Hot Spot #2 - Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

The next popular destination we saw was surprisingly Mt. Kilimanjaro. This expedition was extremely impressive and the full day of travel is so worth it. However, you have to be willing to train for weeks leading up to the journey, and this past group that went had to deal with extremely cold weather conditions. In spite of the difficult terrain, the feeling of climbing 19340 feet definitely is something that you have the right to be proud of. Not only is the hike amazing but students talked about the wonderful immersive experience of getting to interact with different villages and learning more about other cultures.

Hot Spot #3 - Seoul, South Korea and Japan

Another hotspot this year was the Seoul and Japan expedition. This trip looked absolutely breathtaking and extremely immersive. From trying different street foods to visiting various temples, we have heard nothing but praises about this excursion. We recommend trying Okonomiyaki which is a savory pancake topped with Japanese mayo... yum!

Hot Spot #4 - Portugal, Italy and Greece

Finally, we just have to talk about the uber popular Portugal, Italy and Greece trip. This one was really special because you’re able to sightsee all around Europe throughout the three weeks of J-term. It is essential to pack light for this excursion due to all the different traveling and make sure you leave room for souvenirs. Be sure to check out the leaning tower of Pisa and take that oh-so iconic photo. Maybe add taking a leisurely boat ride in Venice to your itinerary!

So, when considering taking the leap and traveling over J-term we would definitely recommend taking advantage of the special abroad opportunities Elon offers. Book that flight!
