Let’s get Diiirrrrty

As we’ve seen in the past, I am one for experimenting with products. I am the testing guinea pig of sorts for The Edge’s Beauty & Wellness team and it is a title I wear proudly. As someone who has bleached their hair since they were 14 years old, my hair has mostly definitely seen some damage. I love to style and color my hair, but it comes at a damaging cost.

I’ve been researching ways to bring my hair to a healthier state without having to give up bleaching and styling or spend an absurd amount of money. Of course, I ran to YouTube. One video that really stuck out to me was from a beauty & lifestyle you-tuber, Alana Arbucci. She emphasized the importance of not washing your hair. To me that sounded scary, unsettling, and just downright OILY. Consistently stripping your hair over and over again with shampoo is not healthy for your hair and is just giving it more damage. Ultimately, your natural scalp oils are the BEST thing for your hair’s longevity and strength.

So here I went, pledging with my flamingo print shower cap to not shampoo my hair more than twice a week and see if this would transform my hair.

Rules:

-       Only wash hair twice a week with Sulfate and Paraben free shampoo + conditioner.

-       I am currently using Pureology Strength Cure Shampoo and Conditioner

-       Link to Shampoo

-       Link to Conditioner

-       Every shower conditions your ends (I shower everyday so I put conditioner on my ends)

-       Avoid using heat more than once in between washes

-       Dry shampoo if necessary, but not everyday

-       Be more intensive with massaging your scalp when you do shampoo your hair once or twice a week. Stimulate your hair follicles and massage.

-       Wash hair every 4 days.

Testing + Thoughts:

I started doing this in January and I cannot tell you how it has helped my hair’s strength, density, and overall health. I feel less of a need to wash my hair since I have “trained” my scalp to not need to be cleansed as often.

The first week was rough. I didn’t exactly feel too confident and I just wanted to keep a hat on. Do not fear, you and your scalp will adjust. But I learned to get creative with low bun hairstyles and using dry shampoo effectively. The most important part of this process is to keep and maintain your scalp’s natural oils, because that is the greatest for moisture, shine, and strength.

After having trained my scalp to only need to be shampooed 1-2 times a week, my bleached, broken hair has definitely become more moisturized and less straw-like.  I used less product and definitely saved money by not shampooing as much. And that Pureology shampoo is NOT cheap.

So, quit shampooing your hair and GET DIRTY LADIES! For the sexiest, shiniest, and best hair of your life.
