Behind the Scenes: iOS 14

With September creeping around the corner, we’re expecting something new from Apple. This month, it’s the new iOS 14. Before the launch, however, Apple typically offers a Beta Software Program for any Apple user that wants to try out the new iOS functionality early. So, that’s exactly what I did.

The update process was such definitely a hassle—it took about four hours to install—but the results were worth the wait. Testers, including myself, are currently on Beta version seven. With every new version, changes tend to get smaller and less noticeable to the user. Some of the new capabilities include enabling a dark mode wallpaper, tagging contacts in texts, responding to a specific text in a group chat, pinning contact conversations in iMessages, a new app library set up and much more.

App Library

Apps are now automatically organized in the library. They are organized into different sections such as suggestions, recently added, social, creativity, productivity, etc. It is convenient because you no longer have to keep all of your apps on the home screen. You can remove the app from the home screen but still find it in the app library.

Widgets

When you first unlock the phone, you’ll notice widgets on the home screen. This feature is a way to get information from your apps at a quicker glance. These widgets pin to the home screen in various spots and sizes. They are more data rich than ever. Additionally, a “widget gallery” allows you to search for a specific widget and scroll through available options.

iMessage

There are a few new things in iMessage worth highlighting. The main interface lets you choose to see all messages sent to you, known senders’ messages and unknown senders’ messages. You can easily filter them if need be.

Also, there’ s now a way to see if someone is typing without having to view the conversation. Chats can now be pinned to the top of the messages list so that your most important messages can be more easily accessible.

If you are in a group chat that likes to change topics quickly, inline messages make it easier to reply to certain messages in the group chat. They will show up as a thread under the original message. Mentions are also a major change in iMessages. It’s designed to let you direct a message to a specific person in a group chat to get their attention or to make it clear who you're speaking to in a group conversation. You can mention someone by typing their specific name as it appears in your contacts.

Siri

Siri got a full makeover in iOS 14. Instead of taking over the entire page when asked a question, it will now show up as a small colorful icon at the bottom of the screen. Siri is now more conversational and remembers previously asked questions.

FaceTime

This long-awaited request is finally here. Now, when a user is on FaceTime with someone and wants to go to a different app, they can do so without being paused on FaceTime. Your inner multitasker is now excited beyond belief.
