Now Trending: Airstream Redos and Road Trips

Quarantine was the perfect time for picking up a new hobby or completing that passion project you’ve been dreaming of for years. For a while now, I have been dreaming about what my tiny home will look like one day (like Pinterest board and drawing sketches kind of dreaming). As it turns out, quarantine inspired many people to take the step to invest in a classic Airstream trailer, and now I might need one of those too!

Although many of us are still coming back around to the idea of getting on a plane, it’s safe to say we’re still in need of a break from home. One solution to this, Airstream travel trailers, started trending recently. Airstreams have a very distinctive look─if you haven't seen one before, just envision a hairspray bottle on wheels! They are rounded and polished aluminum trailers that you hitch to the back of your car and can take with you on your adventures.

During quarantine, the 86-year-old company’s sales skyrocketed. The company was supposedly expecting a drop in sales by 70%, but, to its surprise, sales only dropped by 30%. Suddenly, Airstream began breaking selling records.

The coolest part of the Airstream trend? Purchasing these iconic travels trailers and redoing them. This isn't any easy task by any means, but with more free time and WFH, why not start this newfound passion project?

Popular Youtuber, Monica Church, thought up the idea of redoing an Airstream and purchased one all within a few hours of dreaming about it. Check out her fun series on redoing her Airstream here. She even brings in an interior designer to help her conceptualize what she wants her final dream Airstream to look like!

Some people have even turned their passion for redoing Airstreams into small businesses, reaching people who might not have the time to redo a trailer themselves. Others have done it simply for their own personal enjoyment. Famous actor Matthew McConaughey purchased an Airstream trailer from Hollywood Vintage and now has his own specialized trailer to use as a weekend escape. Technically, his Airstream is an International Ocean Breeze Airstream, but McConaughey likes to refer to it as “The Canoe.”

The nice thing about investing in an Airstream trailer is that you can park it anywhere for a night, or leave it on a piece of land and make it your full-time, tiny home! Airstreams are a great way to get out and see the United States, but also an extremely sustainable way to live life if you decide that tiny home life is for you.

So, the big question now is, where would you take your Airstream? Personally, I would take off on the biggest national park road trip, hauling out to the Pacific Coast Highway fist! Hopefully one day I can fulfill my dream of having a tiny home in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, and maybe it’ll even be an Airstream trailer.

No matter where you end up going, wouldn't it be fun to tow around an Airstream you completely renovated during a pandemic? I think Monica said it best: “Waking up next to a big window just smells like I slept outside.” If camping isn't your vibe but you want to explore the United States right now, it sounds like an Airstream redo and a road trip is right up your alley!
