Why "Girls" Should Be Your New ‘Go-To’ Show

Yes we know we’re a little late to the party, but guys, this show is amazing.

Sure, the last episode aired in 2017, but wow this show is hands down one of my new favorites. I have recommended it to all of my friends, and they, too, and grown to love it. This is the show that basically helped Lena Dunham, Adam Driver and Allison Williams rise to fame (before the new Star Wars movies and Get Out).

I was in one of those phases where I had just finished a fantastic T.V. series and was in search for something fill the void. So, as I was cruising through HBO GO, this series caught my eye. I had always heard about it ever since the series aired in 2012. It received praised for its directing, writing and acting all through its five years -- which is why, I’m guessing, it went on for a total of six seasons.

The show, both written and directed by Dunham, focuses mainly around six characters living in Brooklyn, trying to figure out their lives in terms of love, work and friendships. It begins with one of its main characters, 24 year-old Hannah Horvath (Dunham), sitting at dinner with her parents as they tell her they will be financially cutting her off. What follows is one of the best, most realistic shows I’ve ever encountered. The characters are extremely well developed, honest and are truly some of the most relatable people I’ve ever seen in a T.V. show.

Girls has been praised for its brutally realistic depiction of living and working in New York newly out of college, and it will have you laughing out loud in nearly every single episode.

Disclaimer: There is A LOT of nudity in this series. Like, a lot. Dunham’s character, Hannah, is not afraid to show skin, and neither are any of the other characters for that matter. If you’re not bothered by nudity though, (this sometimes, but rarely shows full on frontals) then you will see how this only helps create the unpolished, realistic, authentic lens of this show.

Girls explores the themes of relationships, friendships, sex, financial struggle, drugs, mental illness, family dynamics and so much more. This is all done, however, in the most open, truthful way.

You will, I guarantee, find at least one character that you relate to the most. The characters are so diverse yet so familiar that it would be hard not to relate to at least one of them. So, I implore you readers to head onto HBO GO (it’s free for all Elon students) and experience the fantastic television series that is Girls for yourselves. I promise you will not regret it.
