Let Me Tell You About College

At the very beginning of the semester, The Edge had the pleasure of interviewing three members of the class of ‘23, aka Freshman.

They were less than three weeks in, and we got to see how college was treating them so far. At the time they were, nervous, excited, and hopeful. Recently, we got the opportunity to speak to the same girls and see if the semester was anything like they thought.

Courtney Shanley told us, “In the beginning, I was worried about making friends, and I also really really missed my mom. I realized making friends was nothing to worry about, and it should not be hard if they are meant to be my friend,” Shanley said. “As time went on, I stopped getting homesick and even started referring to Elon as home, instead of thinking it was just temporary.”

Cia Galatas mentioned that she eventually got used to the amount of free time she had.

“I guess I kept waiting for it to feel like high school, how you start at 8:00 a.m. and are busy until 3:00 p.m. In college, the work is just more spread out. I used to get lonely in between classes because I did not know what to do. Now, I either fill it with naps or hanging with friends.” In the end, she added, “I love my schedule now. I have no idea why it bothered me in the beginning.”

Last time we talked to Peyton Rohlfs, she was doing just fine and trying to figure out what type of friendship she wanted.

“I love college, and I know some people go through a rough transition and get homesick. I kept waiting for that to happen to me and for me to feel it, but it never did. I always thought I would get a little sad or miss home, but I feel like coming to college was the best thing to happen to me.” Later on, she mentioned, “This semester was the happiest I’ve been in my whole life. Not everything was perfect, but I am just so lucky to be here.”

After talking to the three girls, they concluded that college is not as scary as it seems when you are coming in from high school.

Everyone has to go through it, and it is a time of growth. Most people learn extremely valuable life lessons like how to live with a stranger, handle stress, mis home, and find the right friends for you.

We are all lucky to attend such a fantastic school like Elon University, and when we are going through rough patches, it is essential to know that it is just another hoop to jump through, and in the end, it helps us grow.
