What is Your Ideal Dorm Room?

Designing the perfect dorm room is a project. Think about it: you’ll be living in this room for at least a year, so you want to make it as homie as possible. Your dorm room should be your sanctuary, a place that you find comfort in, so we’re going to tell you how to go about designing your perfect room.

1. Aesthetic

Do you want your room to look edgy? Sophisticated? Chic? Boho? No matter what you like, choosing the theme of your room is the best way to start. Pick something that shows people who you are through an artistic lens.

2. Map out space

Going to college can be challenging because you might be living in a much smaller room than you’re used to. Choosing the layout of your room can make all the difference. One top tip I have is to raise your bed, this way you can store extra clothes and miscellaneous items underneath. Use towel racks on your doors to hang bags, jewelry, or jackets, and get a shoe rack to hang on the inside of your closet. This will keep all your shoes organized and leave you more space in the bottom of your closet. Lastly, if you're looking to get some type of seating for your room besides your bed, I recommend getting a pod that you can take the top off of to store items inside. Figuring out how to maximize your space is crucial to creating your ideal dorm room.

3. Choosing decor

College dorms are very plain when you first see them. A hard floor, four blank walls, a closet, desk, and bed is about all you will be given. You want your dorm to feel like home, so covering the walls with things like tapestries, posters, and pictures can make it look 100 times better. Some of our favorite places to find wall decor are Urban Outfitters, Dormify and Society 6. All of these places have so many options for whichever aesthetic you’re going for! Also, making a picture wall of your friends and family is a great way for people to get to know you, fill wall space, and feel at home. Another idea is to bring some kind of disposable or polaroid camera to school, and as you make memories with your friends throughout the year, take photos and add them to your photo wall!
