Where Americans Live Abroad

As students at Elon move closer to graduating, the more they discuss their post-graduate plans. Some may move back home and some may take a job or continue school in a new state, but not many students talk about moving abroad. Plenty of job opportunities and graduate programs exist outside of the country and living abroad can be a truly life-changing experience.

If you move abroad, your global perspective will be widened and you will become a better global citizen by immersing yourself in new cultures and making friends from all over the world. Venturing out of your comfort zone, you will grow as a person in so many ways. You will boost the confidence you have in yourself, become more independent, and learn how to adapt to challenges and new situations. You may also have the opportunity to learn new languages, which makes you a better communicator, expands your career opportunities and sharpens your mind. You will travel more often around your new home and surrounding countries, experiencing more adventure in your daily life. The cost of living is surprisingly low in many countries when compared to America, so you will spend much less living abroad.

With all of these great reasons why you should consider moving abroad, we curated a list of a few popular destinations that Americans move to.

If you are a nature lover, you will fit right in with Canadians. The country boasts pristine natural wonders from massive mountains to crystal clear lakes to even glaciers. Americans also appreciate Canada’s cultural diversity, strong employment market and clean cities. The majority of Canadians speak English, but French is the second official language of the country. Travelers are able to stay in the county without a visa for six months, but need to apply for a permanent residence visa if they want to stay longer.

No wonder people move to Costa Rica with its peaceful, laid-back lifestyle, as well as its lush landscape and exotic wildlife. It is also a much more affordable place to live that still offers a great quality of life. Spanish and English are the main languages spoken, which is helpful for Americans. The move to Costa Rica is incredibly easy, as the country offers a straightforward process to move there and the flights from America are short. Digital nomads love living in the country as it offers a visa specifically for them to stay long-term.
